Frequently Asked Questions
What materials do you use?
We use all sorts of materials for our pieces, the most common being glass beads and aluminum rings of varying sizes. We also use many natural materials, which includes but is not limited to bone, semi-precious stones, shells and even horn. The one item we don't like to use is plastic, and we try to avoid anything that will turn your skin green.
Will chainmaile protect me from knives/fire/guns, etc.?
No, no, and yet more no. Chainmaile was actually pretty bad armor, even back in the day. It was the poor man's armor, because it could be made and repaired realtively quickly and easily, it could be easily stored in a box, and a single shirt could fit a variety of body sizes and types. On the field of battle, it really only kept you from getting chopped in half because the predominant swords at the time were used for broad, sweeping strokes. Of course, this meant you probably got your ribs broken and would end up dying a slow and horrible death due to having your lungs punctured, but at least you didn't get chopped in half. The real up side to this was that the chainmaile would probably survive with minimal damage, and could thus be reused by the next lucky footsoldier.
So please, please, please do not try any stunts while wearing chainmaile, no matter who you buy it from. It will not save your life. If someone tells you chainmaile is knife or bullet-proof, they're lying. If it really were, we'd still be using it and I would be donating my work to local police forces.
Why don't you make your own rings? Isn't it cheaper?
Although it is cheaper from the supply side of things for us to make our own rings, it isn't cheaper time-wise. Having done the math, it's honestly cheaper from a pure money standpoint for us to buy the rings! It's less expensive for our customers as well, as they're not paying for the time we would have put into making the rings ourselves. Also, because our rings are machine-made, the size is consistant and the cuts are much nicer than anything our wire-cutters can do.
This way everyone wins because you the customer get a quality handmade maile item at a reasonable price, and we the maillers get to spend our time actually making maile, which is a lot more fun than coiling and cutting rings for hours (trust me on this).
Are your earrings hypo-allergenic?
Yes, to the best of our knowledge. The earring findings that we purchase are marked as such and we've never received any complaints regarding any kind of irritation. On a side note, I also use these same hypo-allergenic findings, and I haven't had any problems with the earrings that I've made for myself.
How do you ship your products?
We use the good, old-fashioned United States Postal Service. Other methods are too expensive regarding the small size of many of our items. We normally ship via regular mail, but if you need something in a hurry, want it insured, or would rather use a different shipper, send us an e-mail and we'll get it worked out.
How do you pack your products?
More of our items ship inside a padded envelope, wrapped in tissue and in individual plastic bags, should you order more than one item. We do have plain white gift boxes available at no extra charge if you need something gift-packaged; most of our jewelry items will fit in them. Just send us an e-mail.
How can I order?
We accept PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, money orders and personal checks. Money orders and checks will take a bit longer, as we have to wait for checks to clear and for the mail to run, but once we get your payment we will ship your order out. Just send us an e-mail stating what you want to order so we can verify it and send over our address.
What if something breaks on the way to my home?
We pack our pieces as carefully as we can, but if something breaks simply ship it back to us, and we will repair or replace it, if we have the materials available. If we can't find supplies to replicate or repair the item, we will refund the price to you. It sounds strange, but beads can be discontinued just like anything else on the market. Luckily, it doesn't happen often.
Do you accept commissions?
Yes, we do. Simply contact us with your idea and we'll see if we can make it happen. Pricing will depend on the cost of materials and the work involved.
