Saturday Showcase #5 – Gyrick
Today we are looking at Gyrick from deviantART!
1. Care to tell us a bit about yourself?
Okay then. My name is Craig Olsen (Gyrick on the internet). I am a graduate student in Creative Writing at Ball State University. I teach Freshman Composition as well as take graduate level courses. I enjoy movies, video games, comics, anime, watching hockey and baseball, and hanging out with friends and family.
2.What media/materials do you work in? Do you have a favorite?
I usually like to hand draw my pictures and then scan them into a computer to be cleaned up (erasing pencil and eraser marks). From there I either leave the outline as it is or I go in and color it.
I also use the computer to write music.
3. Can you tell us a bit about what inspires you or about your creative process?
Most of the characters I draw are from stories that I write. I generally draw them to get a good mental image of what they look like. As for when I draw, I either do it later at night or in my notebook between classes.
I like to draw people mostly, though I find women a lot easier to draw than men (I don’t know why). I start drawing the head area, and work all the way down until I have an outline of the body. I go back and add detail after that.
4. Do you sell your art? If so, where can we get it?
No. I’m honestly not that secure in my talents to do so. However, I am improving, so you never know!
5. I know it’s hard to choose, but can you show us your three favorite pieces?

6. Do you have any “plans” for your art? New techniques or materials you’d like to try, things you want to work on, etc.?
One of my goals is to write a (or several) graphic novel series. Once again, I’m not sure my artistic talents will work for this, so I will probably collaborate with another artist. I would also like to learn how to color pictures so it looks like they belong in a black & white graphic novel.
7. Anything else for all the people out in Internet Land?
Please remember the wise words of Calvin, “When life hands you lemons, chuck them back with a few more of your own.”

More to come (hopefully).
9. *Bonus Question!
For the D&D geeks: What’s your alignment?
I’ve taken a few online tests, and the most common alignment I get is “Neutral Good.” As an added bonus, my race and class are usually a “Human Bard” at the starting level of “3.”
Thank you, Gyrick!
Go and give him some love!
